Intro

Yokoso means Welcome! So we want to welcome you to join the protests in Japan against the G8 meeting there. In 2008, the meeting of the G8 will take place on the most northern Island of Japan, Hokkaido. From the 7th to the 9th of June 2008 the G8 countries are meeting at the Windsor Hotel at Lake Toya to discuss another year about how to save the Climate and how to develop Africa and it it not hard to foresee that it will be another year of talking and declaring without concrete promises and results.

G8 meetings in Japan – compared to Europe – are just taken place every 8 years, so it is hard to keep an continous mobilisation against the G8 meeting alive. The last one was on the most southern Island of Okinawa. Because of one speciality of this Island, which is that 70 % of all US-Military-Bases are located there, the protests in 2000 against the G8 were mainly organised and dominated by Anti-Military-Groups and with a focus on Military-Base-Issues.

The authors of this document are a collection of activists, scholars, and writers currently based in the United States and Western Europe who have gotten to know and work with each other in the movement against capitalist globalization. We’re writing this at the request of some members of No! G8 Action Japan, who asked us for a broad strategic analysis of the state of struggle as we see it, and particularly, of the role of the G8, what it represents, the dangers and opportunities that may lie hidden in the moment. It is in no sense programmatic. Mainly, it is an attempt to develop tools that we hope will be helpful for organizers, or for anyone engaged in the struggle against global capital.

Es hätte das wichtigste Event der extremen Rechten in diesem Jahr werden sollen. Unter dem Slogan „Es gibt keine gerechte Globalisierung“ mobilisierte ein so genanntes „gib8“-Bündnis, bestehend aus Freien Kameradschaften, der Nationaldemokratischen Partei Deutschlands (NPD) und ihrer Jugendorganisation Junge Nationaldemokraten (JN) für den 2. Juni zu einer „Großdemonstration“ nach Schwerin. Erwartet wurden 2000 Nazis.

Das Oberverwaltungsgericht Mecklenburg-Vorpommern befürchtete gewalttätige Zusammenstöße mit antifaschistischen GegendemonstrantInnen und verhängte den polizeilichen Notstand. Der Nazi-Aufmarsch und die antifaschistische Gegendemonstration wurden verboten. AntifaschistInnen erhielten Platzverweise oder wurden nach ihrer Ankunft am Bahnhof in Gewahrsam genommen.

Aus der Erklärung von »Mouvement de la Paix« und Bundesausschuß Friedensratschlag zum NATO-Jubiläumsgipfel 2009 in Kehl (Deutschland) und Strasbourg (Frankreich):

Mit einem »Doppelgipfel« in Kehl und Straßburg will die NATO im Frühjahr 2009 auf der deutschen und französischen Seite des Rheins ihr 60. Jubiläum feiern. Die Friedensbewegung wird aus diesem Anlaß mit vielfältigen Aktionen, mit Veranstaltungen und Demonstrationen und einem Gegengipfel für eine friedliche und gerechte Welt ohne NATO werben.(...) Mit der Durchführung des Gipfels in Europa soll zum einen die Absicht des französischen Präsidenten Sarkozy honoriert werden, die französische Armee wieder in die militärischen Strukturen der NATO einzubringen. Mit dem Gipfelereignis soll auch die Transformation einer zivilen Europäischen Union in ein Militärbündnis gewürdigt werden. (...)

Interventions # 1

The G8 is more than a place where neoliberal trade agreements are authored. It is also a space where the legitimacy of global governance is reproduced. In 2005, 300,000 people took to the streets in Edinburgh to ask the G8 for a solution to poverty. By 2007, antagonism and dissent prevailed once again. We are entering a period that could mark the resurgence of positive dynamics from the earlier phase of global uprisings. But have we learned from the past? Can we build our interventions on new and more stable ground?

These are the questions that guide the following roundtable discussion with Hanne Jobst (Germany), Saby & Go (Japan), Miranda (Italy), and Jaggi Singh (Canada). The participants highlight the necessity of rooting global insurgency in everyday struggles and consider whether the global circulation of struggles is enabled by continuous networks or events like summit protests.

Kriss Sol is an Amsterdam-based activist researcher. He has been involved in summit protests and local organizing around global issues for several years.

Die Blockaden des G8-Gipfels 2007 haben ein Stück Widerstandsgeschichtegeschrieben. Ihre letztendliche Bedeutung werden sie aber dadurch erhalten,was wir und Ihr aus diesen Erfahrungen macht, wie Block G8 zum Referenzpunktoder zum Steinbruch für kommende Aktionen wird. Mit dieser Broschüreverabschiedet sich Block G8 als politische Struktur und versucht, den Erfolgund Erfahrungen schriftlich zu dokumentieren und damit für die Bewegungfestzuhalten und diskutierbar zu machen.

Am Beispiel des G8-Gipfels, zu dem sich Anfang Juni 2007 die acht mächtigsten Staatschefs in Heiligendamm an der Ostsee versammelten, um eine Politik zu koordinieren, die bei vielen Menschen auf Ablehnung stößt, werden im Folgenden die teils militanten Proteste, die erfolgte staatliche Repression sowie die darauffolgenden Initiativen der Solidarität resümiert und für eine entschiedene und offensive Solidaritätsarbeit plädiert, die die Legitimität militanter Politik hervorhebt.

First international planning meeting

We invite you to join the 1^st international planning meeting in Copenhagen from the 13-14th of September 2008. The meeting aims at preparing a large mobilisation for direct action against the root causes of climate change in Copenhagen and throughout the world during the UN Climate Conference (30 Nov-11 Dec 2009).

We stand at a crossroads in history. The facts are undeniable. Global climate change, caused by human activities, is happening. We all know that, world over, we’re facing a manifold and deepening crisis: of the climate, energy, food, livelihoods, and of political and human rights. Scientific, environmental, social and civil society movements from all over the world are calling for action against climate change.

Hallo und willkommen zu diesem ersten Newsletter der Klimacampvorbereitung. Um möglichst viel Transparenz zu schaffen und auf die schnelle einen Überblick über die wesentlichen Aktivitäten zu geben, werden wir versuchen, regelmäßig diesen Newsletter herauszugeben.

This is a solidarity letter from far across the Eurasian continent, in the far east, Japan.

The globalisation of neo-liberalism has been on a rampage here in Japan as well. It promotes and applauds severe competition between people and is ripping the society into pieces. Through the deflation of the Japanese economy in the 1990’s, management gain and corporate dividends have drastically increased. On the other hand, the Japanese government, with its call for the efficiency of administrative services and maintenance of corporate global competitiveness, has been accelerating the reduction of social security benefits and the form of irregular employment.
